Very nice post. I have one question on the Javascript function you wrote to remove list toolbar menu items.
hideListViewToolbarItems("Edit in Datasheet", "export to Spreadsheet","view rss feed");

It removes everything from "Actions" menu except for "connect to outlook" menu item
. I read your other articles in that series but still unable to find answer for why only "connect to outlook" is not getting removed

Thanks for the blog post, been lots of discussion concerning these two concepts over the years, without doubt it is one of the more confusing aspect of SharePoint solution development. I look forward to a time when the concept disappears completely!

Just quick comment:
Conncerning "Files are in database, less efficient".

(Not sure if you meant the STP file which is of course in the database, or the resulting site. I think the resulting site, and these comments assume that. Apologies if I misunderstood).

I think there are two things here. The first is that the files are only in the database if they are customised (unghosted), otherwise they remain linked to the filesystem, which is why the Site Definition a Site Template is built on must exist on the machine when you provision any new site based on a site template.

So, really, it has less to do with the Site, and more to do with the individual pages.

I'm also pretty skeptical about any performance impact (if thats what you meant by efficiency). It has been talked about endlessly over the years, but not once have I seen any hard data to show that it is slower in any meaningful way.

IO am anxious to find out if this can we used to hide "new" or "item"- my goal is to disallow new item creation.

My list contains a set number of items that are maintained and updated, and there is no need to add items to the list. I prefer to remove the New Item option so users will not be able to add items.
